Take part to our activities!

The activities in which you can participate as a volunteer, tourists but also as a simple sea lover are as follows:

Become a volunteer for dolphins and sea turtles!

Once again this year, in cooperation with national and international scientific bodies, the no profit Association Filicudi WildLife Conservation is promoting volunteer activities (research camps and courses) on cetaceans and sea turtles as weel as naturalistic excursions by boat in the Aeolian islands. If you are a sea lover, especially if you care about dolphins and sea turtles, if you have a good spirit of adaptation and have a great desire to do something for these beautiful animals, you can participate in our volunteer camps! You will spend a pleasant week living in a typical Aeolian house in the wonderful Island of Filicudi, assisted by qualified personnel that has been working with dolphins and sea turtles for many years. We will share our passion with you, involving you in a unique experience and we will teach you to get to know these fantastic animals so that one day you too may make them your work.

Participating as a volunteer or in the research camps and weekly courses you will have the task of carrying out the following activities:

During the research camps and the formation courses the volunteers are involved in making daily sea excursions for monitoring the species being studied.  As regards the cetaceans the research activities are mainly focused on the population of common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) and  striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba), but in some periods of the year it is not uncommon to come across samples of fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) and sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus). The monitoring sessions will also be dedicated to identifying the feeding areas for the loggerhead sea turtle Caretta caretta that are frequently seen in the sea in the area under study. Examples of Scopoli's shearwater (Calonectris diomedea) are mainly observed in the summer period.  During the sea excursions it will be possible to see examples of ocean sunfish (Mola mola), shoals of tuna (Thunnus thynnus) and examples of swordfish (Xiphias gladius) of various sizes. Migrating Marine birds such as the great egret (Casmerodius albus) are mainly seen in late summer-beginning of autumn. In summer we can also observe the nesting of the Eleonora's falcon (Falco eleonorae) on the La Canna rock and below the locality of Ficarrisi (Filicudi) and the by now rare Aeolian wall lizard (Podarcis raffonei), the few examples of which still live on the La Canna rock.  Common swifts (Apus apus) nest in the cave of the Bue marino and some nests have been found on the Monte Nasseri rock.

The Formation Courses are suitable for university students doing three year degree courses and master’s courses (Natural, Biological and Environmental Sciences) and graduates from all Universities. The credits received are accepted by many universities. The credits for extra-university didactic activities will be issued at the request of the student to his didactic secretary and following the evaluation by a teaching body of the activities carried out. Participation in the formation courses is however foreseen for all volunteers and those interested generally. At the end of the course, a certificate of qualification and participation will be issued by the teaching body of the association.
